The North Wales training programme is distributed between four main hospitals. The district general hospitals of Ysbyty Glan Clwyd and Ysbyty Wrexham Maelor are where you will spend a lot of your time. This means we are a tightly knit group of trainee's who are very good in supporting each other. You will also spend some time in Alderhey, which is a large tertiary teaching hospital in Liverpool and some time as a neonatal registrar in Arrowe Park hospital which is also on the Merseyside.
The geographical location for this programme is mostly north east Wales and Liverpool which means that there isn't a significant distance between placements. If located centrally the morning commute may never have to be more than half an hour or so whilst still having ready access to Area's of natural beauty such as Snowdonia and the Clwydian Range. Generally the intake is 3 ST1's per year with occasional entry for individuals at ST4. This allows for a good social aspect to the training as you will get to know your fellow trainees quickly. The consultants also get to know you well and are often highly invested in your training. As there are few trainees they have the time to give you the best education they can offer. There are a number of excellent educators within the North Wales consultant body and as they will see you many times during your training, from ST1 right the way through to Senior Registrar you develop fantastic educational relationships and further your knowledge and skill in Paediatrics. We also have a highly engaged Training Programme Director who is highly approachable. They facilitate tailoring of the programme to each individual trainees needs. |
