Why Paediatrics?
Paediatrics is a diverse specialty with broad scope covering the health of children from birth right up until adulthood. You get to work with a broad range of conditions making it one of the last truly generalist specialties. If that's not your thing, then don't worry as there is also scope to specialise and work in a tertiary hospital. The training itself is flexible, with a high number of trainees being able to work LTFT whilst also being able to tailor your training programme to your own specific interests.
You get to test your communication skills by interacting with a variety of patients with broad ranges in their development meaning that you can tailor each consultation to that specific patient. You also then have the added challenge of communicating with the parents, who are also an important part of the consultation.
It is highly rewarding, being able to help children through what is often a difficult and scary time, and even making that situation better.
You also get to keep practicing technical skills throughout your career with a broad range of procedures coming under your scope of practice. This can range from procedures such as neonatal intubations and lumbar puncture right through to placement of central lines and performing echocardiograms meaning that if you enjoy performing procedures Paediatrics can be a great fit for you.
If you're a highly dynamic individual who relishes the challenge of communicating with a broad range of people whilst having an interest in generalist medicine then Paediatrics might be the perfect specialty for you.
